A serial trailer gets it name from the old Flash Gordon Serial Films." The trailer is done in parts released on a schedule. One of the best examples is The 5th Wave. The campaign was released in four 30 second trailers each a week apart. Part one explained the First Wave, part two the second and so forth. Great piece of work. Each trailer gets darker and more desperate.
The first three episodes describe the attacks on earth in increasing effectiveness of destruction. Episode four establishes the ordinary world and introduces the protagonist.
|Lead||Explain what happens in this wave|
|Excite [interest]||Build on the ramifications|
|Amaze [hook]||The ultimate challenge of that wave|
|Direct [directive]||Book cover and website.|
Each of the four trailers in the series have the same structure.
Episodes 1,2 and 3 start with the norms for the world then move to the crisis of the next wave. Episode 4 begins with the norm but moves to the introduction of the protagonist. Emphasis is on the crisis then in 4 the character.
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
